Is Dry Socket Painful?

Most individuals have their wisdom teeth removed at some point in their lives. The wisdom teeth are the last of the adult teeth to come in, and they often cause problems because there isn’t enough room for them in the mouth. They can become impacted, or they can come in at an angle that crowds other teeth and causes pain. For this reason, wisdom teeth in Pembroke Pines are often removed by a dentist or oral surgeon

All You Need to Know About Dry Socket

What Is a Dry Socket?

After wisdom teeth are removed, it’s common to experience some bleeding and swelling. This is common and normally goes away within a few days. However, in some cases, the blood clot can by dislodged if not taken care of properly. This can lead to extreme pain.

When Do They Occur?

Dry sockets are more common in women than men, and they typically occur within 3-5 days of wisdom tooth extraction. The good news is that dry sockets can be treated with a simple office procedure. During this procedure, cotton gauze or medicated dressing is placed in the socket to help promote healing.

How to Prevent Dry Sockets

Dry sockets are extremely painful and can lengthen the healing process by several days. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to help prevent this problem. First, be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions for post-operative care. This includes using a soft toothbrush, avoiding strenuous activity, and not smoking.

You should also eat soft foods and avoid using straws for the first week after your surgery. If you take these precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing dry sockets.
