Everything You Need to Know About a Dental Extraction

Why Would I Need Dental Extractions?

Aside from wisdom teeth removal, there are a variety of reasons why a person might require having a tooth removed. These causes are typically one of the following: crowding, infection, or decay.

Your dentist or oral surgeon will go over the process with you and explain what to expect. Depending on your situation, it differs from patient to patient. However, there are two types of extractions:

Surgical Extraction: Teeth that are below the gum line, impacted, or damaged are more difficult to treat and may require gum surgery.

Simple Extraction: If the tooth is above the surface, your dentist or oral surgeon will numb the area around it and extract it.

Oral surgery entails a wide range of procedures and treatments, all of which are designed to address specific needs and restore your smile to its best health.

Tooth Extraction: Aftercare Procedures

  1. After your procedure, keep your gauze in place for 2 hours.
  2. Strenuous exercise should be avoided.
  3. For three days, do not smoke or drink through a straw.
  4. For the next 24 hours, eat only soft foods and drink plenty of water.
  5. Apply ice to any swollen areas of your face every hour or as prescribed for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Rest and sleep with your head up to help reduce swelling.
