How Should I Be Brushing My Teeth?

At Least Two Minutes

Based on research by the American Dental Association, most people brush their teeth for only 50 seconds. This is why dentists and other dental professionals emphasize the importance of brushing for two minutes twice a day. Brushing for longer periods of time will ensure that every part of your teeth is free from plaque. However, it is equally important that you don’t brush your teeth longer than three minutes because it may thin down your dental enamel.

Work Smarter Not Harder

We all know that to regularly brush and floss twice a day can be very challenging. How much more if we’re required to brush for at least two minutes? To make things easier, you can assign 30 seconds on each quadrant of your teeth – top right, top left, bottom right, and bottom left.  If this is not working for you, you can set a timer to guarantee you don’t lose track of time. If this still doesn’t work, you can purchase an electric toothbrush with a timer. For kids, you can buy a toothbrush that includes a timer, vibrates, and light up. This will make it more fun for your kids to brush their teeth.
