Oral Surgeon in Miami Beach | Different Types of Frenectomies
A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that fixes an issue with the frenum. The frenum is a fold of tissue in the mouth that restricts movement. The frenum connects to either the upper lip, the tongue, or the lower lip. Let’s take a look at the different types of frenectomies that are performed by an oral surgeon in Miami Beach.
When the frenum is connected to the upper lip, it causes spacing between the upper two front teeth. In some extreme cases, it can even extend into the gum. This prevents an orthodontist from being able to close up a mid-line gap between the front teeth, which can furthermore cause problems down the line.
When the frenum comes into play with the lower lip or jaw it can result in the separation of the incisor teeth. Sometimes it can even cause the gum to pull away from one or more of the lower teeth. Consequently, that can cause food and other things to get lodged and cause gum problems.
The third most common type of undesirable frenum in the mouth is that which connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. It can restrict the movement of the tongue. As a result, this can cause speech difficulties and adversely affecting oral hygiene. This is commonly known as “tongue-tied”.
