In the oral cavity, most people have two bands of tissue called frenums that are located in and around the teeth and gums. Sometimes the frenum can impair oral function. When that happens a frenectomy is performed. Let’s take a deeper look at what the frenum is and how a frenectomy is performed by an Oral Surgeon in Aventura.

What Is a Frenum?

They are two basic types of frenums: a lingual and a labial frenum. The lingual frenum is located between the base of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. The lingual frenum comes in all different sizes. If it restricts the movement of the tongue, it can cause a condition known as “tongue-tied”.In the upper arch, the tissue that connects the gum to the lip is called the labial frenum. The labial frenum can sometimes be abnormally wide or long. When this happens, it may connect through to the gum tissue between the teeth and extend to the front portion of the roof of the mouth, creating a space between the two front teeth.

What Is a Frenectomy?

If any sort of complication arises with either frenum, a frenectomy is performed to fix the issue. The frenum is typically reduced in size with a scalpel or a laser made specifically to cut soft tissue.
