How to Sleep Following a Tooth Extraction

Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions for Aftercare

Pay heed to your oral surgeon’s aftercare recommendations for the best possibility of sleeping the night away in comfort. You’ll have a smoother and simpler recovery if you take good care of yourself while recuperating from wisdom teeth extraction.

Follow these steps to set the stage for a good night’s sleep:

  • Limit your physical activities as much as possible.
  • Keep hydrated, but avoid drinking via a straw.
  • Eat soft and cold smoothies.
  • Avoid tobacco in any form.
  • Apply ice and heat as recommended until you are ready to retire to your bed.

Take Your Prescribed Pain Reliever

You could be in pain after your anesthetic wears off, and any discomfort can make it difficult to sleep. Try not to put up a fight. Take your pain medication as prescribed by your oral surgeon to ensure a decent night’s sleep.

Keep Your Head Elevated

You should sleep or lie with your head elevated for the first several nights following a wisdom tooth extraction. When sleeping on your side, a single pillow should work. If you’re having difficulties sleeping in that posture, lean back and pile a few pillows around you for comfort and support.
