Sleep Apnea in Aventura | 3 Types of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a very common sleep disorder, affecting roughly 20 million Americans. It’s a condition where a person periodically stops breathing while sleeping. These pauses in breathing can occur anywhere from a few times a night up to hundreds of times a night. There are three types of sleep apnea. Let’s take a look at the different types of sleep apnea in Aventura.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea and is believed to affect approximately 4% of men and 2% of women. It is caused by partial or complete blockage of the airways during sleep. This can happen anywhere from a few times a night to hundreds of times a night depending on the severity of the condition. While it can affect many people, only about 10% of all people with OSA seek treatment.

Central Sleep Apnea

Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain temporarily fails to signal the muscles responsible for controlling breathing. While OSA is looked at as a mechanical problem, CSA is considered a communication problem. Central sleep apnea is often caused by medical problems and conditions that affect the brainstem and is much less common than obstructive sleep apnea.

Where can I get treated for sleep apnea in Aventura?

Complex sleep apnea, or mixed sleep apnea, is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea symptoms.
